On Sivan 3, in preparation for the Giving of the Torah G-d instructed Moshe:
“And the HaShem said to Moses, “Go to the people and prepare them today and tomorrow, and they shall wash their garments. And they shall be prepared for the third day, for on the third day, HaShem will descend before the eyes of all the people upon Mount Sinai. And you shall set boundaries for the people around, saying, Beware of ascending the mountain or touching its edge…” (See more in “Shemot”, 19:10-15).
Today these “Three Days of Limitations” (“Hagbalah”) are marked by increased Torah study.
According to a famous Midrash, when the Jewish people stood at Mount Sinai to receive the Torah, HaShem asked for a guarantee that they would keep it. When they said “Baneinu orvim otanu” — “Our children will be our guarantors”. (Midrash Rabbah, Song of Songs 1:3,1)
During the upcoming three days, leading to this year’s Matan Torah, the Rebbe recommends setting aside additional time to connect and study with kids – especially with the small ones! (התוועדויות תשמ”ו עמ’ 409).
